Day 6 Belize

Belize is (as the natives say) un'belize'able. Belize is the only Central American country that speaks English as it's primary language. Most people speak Spanish too. We decided not to take an excursion with the ship because they didn't offer cave tubing. We found a local tour group when we got off the ship.

After a 45 minute drive through the Belize countryside, we were outfitted with an inner tube, life jacket and head lamp.
Then we had a hike through the jungle. Our guide was amazing and pointed out the edible insects and plants and actually got a few in our group to eat a termite. He said they tasted like carrots, but Jonathan and I took his word for it.
At some point in Belize our disposable waterproof camera was dropped and all of the pictures are off center, but here is Jonathan, Joe and Dawna about to get into the river. The cave we went through is in the background.

The cave was long enough that it became completely dark without our head lamps. The water varied from slow and deep to quick and shallow. The cave stayed about 20 feet wide.

I wish I had more pictures of Belize, but my disposable camera ran out of film. About halfway through the cave we came upon a sinkhole. There were trees growing on the side of the cave and the light shining down on them made it look like a window. There were also a couple of waterfalls in the cave, but you have to use your headlamp to see them. If you are ever in Belize, I highly recommend the cave tubing. Amazing.

When we got back to the ship I noticed a half a dozen scabs on my legs that looked like pin pricks. I mentioned these to the others and we all had a few. These pricks grew into things that looked like mosquito bites and itched like crazy. I never saw what bug bit us, but they lasted for a solid week and itched like crazy.

  1. uh, are you sure that you all didn't get something from the cave water?? The pin prick scabs would be too weird for you all to have without seeing any bugs on you. I almost got talked in to cave tubing until your little itching story came along :)
